Dutch Officials Want You To Forget Holland

News You Can Use…For decades, the Dutch government used “Holland” and “the Netherlands” interchangeably to describe the country known for its iconic canals, tulip fields and windmills. But now the government has started to rebrand the country as the Netherlands to enhance its image in the face of global competition…  The New York Times

How To Fly Business- Or First-Class Without Paying A Fortune

News You Can Use…For me, flying in business or first class is not about the extra attention or the meals — which are still, let’s face it, airplane food — or even about the endless supply of booze (well, maybe a little bit). Here’s how to fly business or first class for less (besides snagging a good fare when you see it). It’s about comfort, especially on long-haul flights, when that lie-flat seat is crucial, but that comes at a cost. So I’m going to tell you how to fly flat without paying full freight…  Los Angeles Times

The Move To Upgrade U.S. Airports

News You Can Use…Consistently ranked the best in the world, Singapore’s Changi Airport is one of the busiest on the planet. The Worst Seat On A Plane — And How To Avoid It

News You Can Use…Ask Clayton Conway about the worst seat on a plane, and he’ll tell you about the time he flew from Denver to Seattle on Frontier Airlines. “It was the worst flight experience I’ve ever had,” says Conway. “I was seated in a bulkhead seat that not only didn’t recline, but was also kitty-corner to a restroom…  Washington Post

    Hi Jim,
A few years ago on Christmas morning, I flew from Tampa to Chicago on Frontier. I don’t remember the type of plane, but I got a window seat near the back that was its own little section behind the toilets. That was fine, kind of cozy even. But just outside my window, like a monster’s face in the plane window of a horror movie, was one of the engines. It was the loudest engine in the history of aviation. I used earplugs and clamped my hands over my ears the entire 3 hours. I thought I would probably go deaf. My ears were ringing like a 4-alarm fire when we finally deplaned, but thankfully I didn’t have to learn to read lips. Frontier had allowed me to change my reservation without charge though, after I had inadvertently booked the flight for DEC 24. So no hard feelings.
    Cheers – Stan

      Hi Stan,
That doesn’t sound like the kind of adventure I’d like to have. I’ve had bad seat but, thankfully, not anything like that. Before I make a reservation I always try first to see the available seats, and always try to fly on planes where the window seats are two across.
      Jim
