L andlocked Serbia is right in the heart of the Balkan region. And while many might remember its name from bloody conflicts in the 1990s, today its young population is infused with energy and fuels a nightlife which some say is unmatched throughout the Balkan states.

Its capital of Belgrade lacks the attractiveness of other cities – you’ll see some guidebooks referring to it as “gritty” – but its architecture and museums are of some interest. To the north is the Vojvodina Plain, which provides much of the nation’s food. Here you’ll also find more than a dozen monasteries in the Fruška Gora National Park.

South of the capital you’ll find more monasteries in the rolling hills and valleys, as well as reminders of Turkish control of the area a century ago, as you stroll through the old quarter in Novi Pazar.

Transportation

There are no direct flights from North America, although there are from other capitals such as London. Rail travel, except on international services, can be poor, and travel by bus is said to be the most popular option for many.  Those driving by car will find many of the highways well maintained. (Note: in preparing this article we were unable to find reliable information on intra-country rail or bus services. Because of this we have not linked to any sites regarding rail or bus services in Serbia.)

Hotels

Hotel options, especially in the larger cities of Belgrade and Novi Sad, are good and are improving elsewhere.

Food

Serbian traditional cuisine is influenced by the cooking of Hungary and the Mediterranean, and usually emphasizes grilled meats. You’ll also find a good choice of international dishes in Belgrade.
